AW Blair & Sons traces unbroken record of service to the communities of Stevenston, Saltcoats and Ardrossan, back to the mid-1950’s.
Originally established as a joinery business by Alexander Wallace Blair, the undertaking arm today is now a separate entity dedicated solely to funeral directing within the three towns.
This evolution has seen the development of the premises at Seabank Street in Saltcoats, which is now the main focus of the firm’s activities.
AW Blair & Sons premises offer clients a complete funeral service, including the use of a well-appointed service room, or parlour, private rooms for the making of funeral arrangements or viewing of the deceased, with ample parking for the exclusive use of mourners attending funeral services.
All vehicles used for the conduct of funerals are garaged on-site.
The service room is equipped with an induction loop as part of a sound system, which is designed to allow hearing-aid users the ability to switch to the “T” setting.
A ducted ventilation system has recently been installed.
Mr Blair senior gained his Diploma in Funeral Directing in 1968, with his son, Ian qualifying in 1983. To this qualification was later added the Membership of the British Institute of Embalmers in 1986. The latter qualification has proved an invaluable specialisation for the full time professional funeral director.
The advent of the pre-arranged funeral has seen the firm adopt Golden Charter Funeral Plans as its preferred scheme and a wholehearted endorsement of this product is offered, due in no small part to its inception here in Scotland.
The firm offers modern vehicles for the use of the bereaved, and carry out an ongoing programme of vehicle upgrades and replacement.
For those wishing to employ the services of a monumental sculptor, AW Blair & Sons take on the administration of an agency, which involves close co-operation with the burial authority, North Ayrshire Council.
Over the years excellent working relationships have been established with the other caring professions within the community.
Funeral directing on a day basis involves liaison with local clergy of all denominations, doctors and nursing staff, solicitors and of course the police force in connection with sudden death.
AW Blair & Sons is a privately owned independent funeral service and as such are members of the trade association which represents this grouping, the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors.
For many years, Mr Ian Blair has chaired the Ayrshire Branch of the National Association of Funeral Directors. This organisation is a forum for the member firms within Ayshire and has close links with the National Association which in turn represents the interests of members through various committees involved with Health and Safety, Parliamentary Liaison, and so on.
Now in the second generation, AW Blair & Sons offer to provide a complete funeral service to the highest standards and continue to serve the local community as a locally owned family business.
